DEAR CHESTER

My cat seems to hate me. She ignores me when I call her, walks away when I try to pet her, and only comes to me when she wants food. What am I doing wrong?
—Feeling Rejected
Chester Says:
First, let me correct your misunderstanding.
Your cat does not hate you.
She simply has standards.
You must understand that affection cannot be demanded. It must be earned. And frankly, humans have a terrible habit of assuming that because they provide food, shelter, and the occasional treat, they are entitled to our attention.
Ridiculous.
Try this instead:
Stop calling her. She'll come looking for you.
Stop chasing her. She'll wonder why you've suddenly become interesting.
Sit quietly. Preferably somewhere comfortable.
Provide snacks. This is not bribery. This is diplomacy.
And when she finally climbs into your lap, resist the urge to immediately smother her with affection. Allow her to settle. Give her a gentle scratch behind the ears.
Then enjoy the moment.
Until she leaves.
Because she will leave.
Probably immediately after you get comfortable.
That's how cats work.
